Losing weight and getting fit can be an overwhelming challenge for some people. Just getting started can be a battle.  But if you've made the decision to trim some pounds, then it is a good idea to start a weight loss exercise program and not just a diet program.

The key element to starting a good weight loss, exercise program is to get involved in an activity that you enjoy. If you hate to jog, then why put yourself through that?
Find out what you enjoy doing as far as exercise and stick to it. Walking can become an effective and enjoyable means of exercise for example and it can also be a good social outlet.

The first thing you should do before you start any exercise program is to check with your doctor. You should always make sure that you are healthy enough to start any exercise program and in consultation with your doctor, you can establish fitness milestones that you can work towards that are safe and healthy.

The next thing that you should consider after you establish your fitness goals is to create a plan of action. Effective goal setting takes a monumental task and breaks it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. For example, "Lose 50 pounds" - can sound intimidating.  Lose 2.5 pounds every week for the next 5 months sounds manageable.

In addition to your doctors’ guidance with your specific weight loss goals, you can also learn quite a bit about various fitness benefits and healthy exercise routines from fitness books or a good exercise DVD.  You probably already know many of the basic principles.  But whether you consider yourself informed or not, you can always gain valuable information from qualified experts.

Basic Exercise Principles

It's critical that you keep your body hydrated before, during and after a workout. Drinking sufficient quantities of water will help flush out any toxins that are released from
your body from exercising. Staying hydrated will also keep your muscles from becoming unbearably sore and tired the day following a work out.

It is a good idea to switch exercise routines between cardio exercises and weight training exercises. Switching between the two will give your body a well rounded workout. It will allow you to lose weight faster and build lean muscle.  As you build muscle mass, you will raise your metabolism and your body will begin to burn more calories even when you are at rest.

If you become tired while exercising, take a break - understand that is better to take a long term view. Hopefully, your decision to get fit and lose weight is for your lifetime
and not just for an event or occasion.  Quality rest is imperative to a healthy mind and a healthy body.  And, it is easier to injure yourself when you are tired. If you are trying to lose weight and get into shape, the last thing you need is an injury that will cause you to lose momentum.

Some people find that they do better in groups of people. If this sounds like you, join a gym or an exercise club. Earlier we suggested walking.  If this interests you, you
could look into finding a local hiking club.

Yoga is another fantastic means of improving your level of fitness and enhancing your participation in other activities.  You should have no trouble finding a local Yoga club
where you can meet other like-minded people who can help motivate you and hold you accountable for sticking to your goals.

Weight loss by exercising is one of the best ways to lose weight. You will not only feel better because of the exercise, you will start to build muscle mass and look a lot
better. When you are trying to lose weight, don’t depend on diet alone to do it for you. It is critical that you make a total lifestyle change and incorporate exercise into your
daily life.
