Besides meds, how can I help my 93 year old wheel chair bound dad with constipation problem?
He’s already been given an enema and stool softeners without any results. I know that there is a position in yoga that assists with this problem. Does anyone know about this? I know most of his issue is due to age and lack of mobility.
The stool softener won’t hurt; but, the fiber with adequate hydration (fluid intake) with help the stool bulk and the fluid and stool softener will keep it soft.
Do not casually decide to have your dad start drinking water with sea salt in it. It is irresponsible to suggest that before knowing if the patient is on a salt restricted diet or has kidney disease. You don’t want to cure the constipation; but, cause him to have a stroke from his blood pressure spiking or cause renal failure as a result of the strain on the kidneys cause by the salt drawing more moisture into the intestinal tract.
Salt water flushes have been used for centuries. Bleeding of the patients was used for centuries as well. It doesn’t mean it was a good idea. A salt water flush is an old fashioned osmotic laxative. Fleet used to market a phospha soda laxative (sodium phosphate in water a.k.a. salt water flush). It could be used as a laxative or also as a flush for people preparing for bowel examinations. Fleet voluntarily pulled from the market as a result of several law suits claiming it caused renal failure in the patients. In Fleet’s defense they did provide a warning for those with renal problems and warned to drink lot’s of water with it.
